PhotonTek Brand Review | PhotonTek LED Grow Lights

PhotonTek LED grow lights have created a significant following among growers due to their perfect balance of price, quality, and performance. Find out more about this up-and-coming brand and its innovative tech!

Growing indoors has quickly become a significant part of the cannabis industry in Canada since it was federally legalized almost 3 years ago. The US has, slowly but surely, developed its own market by having many states legalize it individually. Having seen these changes happening from across the ocean, various foreign brands have been entering these markets and bringing new products to the table.

PhotonTek is definitely one of those brands, seeing how just 2 years ago it was available only in the UK and European markets. However, it is now offered in many retail and online stores servicing both Canada and the US alike.

The PhotonTek brand offers high-performance LED grow lights, namely their X Series and the smaller SQ series, and accessories to go with them. Let’s take a closer look at the brand’s mission, as well as their LED lights, starting with their innovative design and unique understanding of the needs all indoor growers have!

PhotonTek LED Grow Lights

As we just mentioned, PhotonTek has so far designed grow lights in two series - the X series, and the SQ series. This brand combines experience gained through years of growing plants, with an abundance of photobiology knowledge to bring the absolute best products to the market.

The technology behind this brand is what makes the real difference when comparing PhotonTek lights to other brands in the similar price range. Their evolutionary Activ-Adapt, magnetic LED light bar technology allows users to easily assemble the lights and have the ultimate modular growing experience.

This comes as the result of PhotonTek lights being designed and engineered by people who are growers first, people who understand what your plants love and need. The bar technology is leaps and bounds ahead of what many other manufacturers are using - especially quantum boards.

Quantum boards were a great solution for earlier-generation LEDs. But, as much as their design made difference in the early days - it is now getting left behind by the bar design, such as the one implemented in the X Series.

The X Series has so far proven to be highly appreciated among growers, which is why we’ll take a look at it first.

X Series

PhotonTek X Series LED grow lights are a true force on the market - they are designed in such a way to deliver full-spectrum light with high intensity delivered through a multi-bar, linear design.

The light efficacy and PPFD with the new bar design implemented on PhotonTek lights is drastically improved when compared with older designs. This especially goes for quantum boards, some of which have been found to create hot spots comparable to HID and HPS lights.

The PhotonTek X series LED grow lights come in 4 different versions:

Of the 4 models listed, only 3 are currently available, as the X 1000W PRO is not available as of the moment of writing this article, but the company plans on making it available sooner rather than later. With that being said - let’s talk a bit about each of the models individually.

PhotonTek X 465 PRO LED grow light

The PhotonTek X 465 PRO LED grow light is a great entry-level light, however, it’s more than just that. Sold in Europe as the Zeus 465W Pro, this grow is light is a great pick for intermediate and commercial growers as well.

According to the manufacturer’s website - when compared to regular similar wattage HPS lights, the X 465 PRO can increase your yields up 30-60% while producing significantly less heat.

PhotonTek X 465W PRO LED grow light

This light is perfectly suited for both the vegetative and flowering phases, which means you won’t have to switch out your lights mid-way through your grow. It has a coverage area of 3’ x 3’ up to 4’ x 4’, and on the product spec sheet, you’ll notice most tests were done on the 4’ x 4’ coverage so we suggest trying out both and deciding what fits your needs better.

The X 465 PRO comes with a 10V dimmer included. The dimmer allows users to easily reduce and increase light intensity using 4 different settings - 100%, 75%, 50%, and 25%. This can come in handy if your plants get easily stressed. You’ll be able to change the light intensity without having to manually adjust the height and position of your grow light.

PhotonTek X 600W PRO LED grow light

PhotonTek X 600W PRO LED grow light is sold in Europe as the Zeus 600W Pro LED. This grow light is full of awesome features that will have you excited to put it together as soon as you buy it!

The X 600W PRO has a linear design, just like the other X series products, with interchangeable magnet LED bars. It comes with a detachable driver and 6 bars, each one being 100W, a driver, a dimmer, and some metallic wires for easier hanging.

The bars are equipped with heat dissipation fins, which make it so that any heat produced by the lights is sent upwards, instead of dropping down on your plants. Each bar is also equipped with Lumileds Phillips Diodes, as well as Osram diodes to truly cover the full spectrum of light.

The X 600W produces a total of 1620 μmol/s - a number generated in the company’s internal sphere tests to check the total PPF output of this light fixture. The light efficacy of this model is 2.7 μmol/J.

PhotonTek X 1000W PRO LED grow light

PhotonTek X 1000W PRO LED grow light is one of those lights growers keep having in the “Best LED grow light” conversation. There are really no downsides to it.

The X 1000W PRO has 10 individual 100W bars, as well as a driver - just like the previous two models. However, unlike the previous two, this LED light is capable of producing a total PPF output of 2700 µmol/s.

The best thing about getting one of these is that you can alway reduce the amount of bars if you need a smaller PPF output, or want to cut down on the power bill. Simply remove one, or as many bars as you want, adjust the height and the rest of your grow accordingly.

It goes without saying that this LED light is meant for servicing larger spaces - however the manufacturer hasn’t yet disclosed this information. If we had to guess - it’ll most likely be somewhere in the 5’ x 5’ to 6’ x 6’ range, just like the XT 1000 CO2, the next light on our list.

PhotonTek XT 1000W CO2 LED grow light

Sold in Europe as the Zeus 1000W Xtreme PPFD CO2, the PhotonTek XT 1000W CO2 LED grow light is one of the most sought-after grow lights by professional growers. Both commercial growers and hobbyists alike are thrilled with this piece as it is without a doubt one of the most powerful sets of LED lights on the market right now.

The manufacturer recommends using this light at a lower height above your canopy with the supplementation of CO2 so that your plants can absorb very high amounts of light this fixture produces. The supplementary use of CO2 is not imperative - but if you don’t use it make sure you hang this set of LEDs a somewhat higher spot above the canopy.

PhotonTek XT 1000W CO2 grow light

The XT 1000W CO2 grow light is capable of putting out an astounding 2925 µmol/s while having the photon efficacy of 2.9 µmol/J. You can use it to light a 5’ x 5’ or a 6’ x 6’ space without having too many worries if your yields will increase - because they undoubtedly will.

The only possible downside to this light is having your plants burnt by not properly supplementing them with CO2. The rule of thumb with CO2 supplementation is to never give your plants too much CO2 as the environment may become toxic. You will definitely want to keep the CO2 levels around 1000 - 1500 PPM of CO2 when growing with the XT 1000.

Knowing how to properly use CO2 in your grow, and how to make use of all those photons hitting your plants from above is what we call high-PPFD cultivation and if done right, you can expect 20% to 40% increase in yields and growth speed. Using the XT 1000W CO2 LED grow light can definitely make a big change in your setup - so make sure you’re ready to handle it!

My sq300 died after 6 weeks. Things happen which is why I went with an American company with a reputation to back it. Whelp 3 weeks later they finally responded to me. My first and last photontek purchase to be sure.

How come you never have the x2? Now that I have the money, I don’t think I want it anymore because it’s been a such hassle.
